Report from the President

The Provincial Riding Association has worked very hard this year to promote the conservative movement, both Provincially and Federally.

FEDERALLY

  • We worked diligently to get Guy Lauzon elected as our M.P. As you know, Guy successfully defeated the Liberal incumbent that held the seat for fifteen years. I want to congratulate Guy and all the conservative members involved in this campaign.
  • We continue to offer our support to Guy and the Federal Riding Association to help keep his profile as high as possible in the riding.

PROVINCIALLY

  • We worked with P.C. Ontario to help select a new leader. Wes Libbey, Bill Smirle, and their team did an excellent job in our riding to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • We held a successful Golf Tournament in September that raised approximately twelve hundred dollars. We golfed in wonderful weather and had a great dinner and social evening. Chris Savard agreed to chair the Golf Tournament again next year and is scheduling the Event in June. We anticipate even more participants next year.
  • A strategic planning session was held on October 24, 2004. This session delineated our Riding Association direction for the next three years. We thank Blair McCreadie, Party President for volunteering to facilitate this session.
  • Other fundraising events include a Victorian House Tour in December, and tributes and toasts for area conservative personalities in the spring of 2005. If anyone has suggested names, or other fundraising suggestions, contact barry@millett.ca.

In Conclusion, we have had an exciting year to date with very positive results. One of the most promising results was the election of Dalton McGuinty. With his record of broken promises, we are almost guaranteed to have an elected member locally and a majority provincial conservative government in the next election. However, it will take a lot of hard work and plenty of monetary resources to ensure that success.

You can assist the Riding Association by volunteering your time and participating in our annual fundraising events. I am looking forward to working with you.

2004 Leadership Campaign

The Ontario PC Party has governed the province of Ontario for 50 of the last 60 years, former Premier Bill Davis reminded Party members September 18, 2004, during a lively speech at the leadership election event in Toronto.

With the selection of John Tory as party leader, and his naming of opponents to leading opposition critic positions, we are united to work on defeating the McGuinty Liberals in 2007 and returning to power. Jim Flaherty is the finance critic, his supporter John Baird is health critic and Frank Klees is education critic.

Local voting in Cornwall included an advance poll. The Ramada Inn event was capably organized for our riding by Returning Officer Bill Smirle, Assistant Returning Officer Wes Libbey and Credentials Chair Todd Lalonde. A total of 251 persons voted on the first ballot for an impressive 62.5 per cent turnout. Jim Flaherty received 166 votes or 66.5 per cent of the total cast, followed by Klees with 44 and Tory with 41. Other election workers here included Barry Millett, Bob Noble, Don Russell, Todd Lalonde, Verla Perrin, Margaret Webb, Nancy Logtens, Kaye Hanna, Guy Lauzon and Leslie O'Shaughnessey.

John Tory - PCPO Leader - speaks to Eastern Region Riding Presidents

The new leader of the Ontario PC Party, John Tory, spoke in Ottawa October 23 to a meeting of Riding Association Presidents from Eastern Ontario. Glen Grant led a delegation of seven from our riding.

Tory listed the following priorities for the Party and said we must:

  • Be united
  • Concentrate for the next two years at Queen's Park on identifying and solving the problems caused by the McGuinty government.
  • Erase the party debt… "our single biggest challenge"
  • Formulate policy for the next election, starting with our general meeting in Ottawa in February. It is a time to renew the party, he said.
  • Outreach for new members, especially young people, women and newer Canadians.

Tory told the meeting Ontarians want a government they can trust and one which is competent and since the McGuinty Liberal fail on both counts, our future is bright.

SDC Golf Tournament

Co-Chairs Chris Savard and Guy Lauzon ordered up excellent weather, good company, great golfers and a gourmet dinner on September 24, 2004 at Summerheights Golf Links in Corwnall, Ontario. The return of this event was very successful raising over $1,200 for the SDC PC Riding Assocation.

The winning foursome included Dick Aubry, Luke Bedard, Orval Brownell and Guy Leger. Closest to the pin winners included Dick Aubrywho won a Ramada Inn & Conference Centre overnight luxury package and David Guy was closest to the Blue Bird on the 18th hole and won a terrific glass bird for his skill.
