On tax filing day, Tory pushes Minister to call in Auditor to probe spending
Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory today repeated his call for the Auditor to probe a McGuinty Liberal grant slush fund after more information emerged about unaccountable and rushed money paid to groups with Liberal Party ties. “It’s tax filing deadline day and Ontarians want Dalton McGuinty to be accountable for how he’s spending tax dollars,” said Tory. “We keep finding out new information about McGuinty Liberal slush funds every day. It’s time to call in the Auditor to clear the air.” In the Legislature today, Tory pressed both the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and the Minister of Culture to explain year-end money granted to groups around the province. During Question Period, the Minister of Culture contradicted Dalton McGuinty who said on Friday that millions went “out the door [snaps his fingers] just like that.” He went on to say “no application form. No formal process.” Tory also questioned the McGuinty Liberals on a newly-discovered $25,000 grant the Ministry of Citizenship provided to the Lost Villages Historical Society near Cornwall, an organization local MPP Jim Brownell was president of for 12 years. Brownell acknowledged to the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder there was no formal application process and he just found out about the funding opportunity.
“The only MPPs who knew about these slush fund grants were McGuinty Liberal MPPs,” said Tory. “This is an astonishing abuse of the public purse for political purposes. The auditor needs to look at these slush funds because it just keeps getting worse.”
