The Stormont Dundas and South Glengarry Ontario PC Riding Association will be holding its Second Annual Noble Villeneuve Golf Classic at Summerheights Golf Links in Cornwall on Saturday August 26, 2006. The annual event is an important fundraiser for the Riding Association, but more importantly it is an opportunity for Cornwall and the region to recognize and celebrate the tireless efforts of the former long-serving MPP from Maxville.
In 2005, local Conservative were both pleased and honoured that Noble agreed to join with us at Summerheights and to allow the organizers to rename the tournament as the Noble Villeneuve Classic. His generosity of spirit and support will ensure that it will continue to be a Conservative tradition in this riding for years to come.
This isn’t the first tradition that Noble has been instrumental in creating. As some will remember, it was Noble and Basil Dawley who, many years ago, began what would become a holiday tradition and a major fundraising event for the Riding Association. For many across SD&G, it just isn’t Christmas unless you have a Bluebird roasting in the oven.
And if it wasn’t Christmas until your Bluebird arrived ... the summer wasn’t complete without the annual picnic at the Villeneuve farm. No event held bigger promise for the renewal of old friendships and the igniting of passion for grassroots politics in eastern Ontario than that gathering on the Dyer Road.
The Golf Tournament provides a great opportunity for area residents to reflect on how Noble represented his constituents during his years at Queen’s Park. He was the epitome of what is known as a “constit” man - both tireless and effective in looking after his constituents.
And it didn’t seem to matter whether he was in opposition or in government. Noble had the ability to get things done. Perhaps less well known and important also to note is the way Noble represented both this riding and the province of Ontario in caucus and at the cabinet table.
Known for his gentlemanly ways, Noble remains one of the most highly respected and genuinely liked members to sit in the Provincial Legislature. Even his opponents were hard pressed to describe him in anything less than terms of esteem and admiration.
But Noble was no push over. He was a formidable opponent and a worthy combatant. His former cabinet colleague Elizabeth Witmer, on a visit to this riding once talked about Noble’s unique style.
His easy going manner was expected at cabinet she said “but when Noble slammed that big fist down on the table, we all knew it was time to pay attention”.
The Organizing Committee is currently working on finalizing the details on a key-note speaker for the event. Tickets for this scramble tournament are $90.00 and include golf, cart and meal. Tickets for the dinner only, are $35.00. Should you wish to join in the festivities, as we pay tribute to Noble Villeneuve, please contactl me at 933-8973 or at the email below.
